Case study: New Viessmann boiler 100-W with Vi-care stat in Willenhall
When you get asked to quote your website designer for a new boiler, two things jumped out for me, firstly it’s a great opportunity to showcase what we do and secondly he already knows what my product offerings are so I want to install the best product for him and his family’s requirements.
The sites first visit was to obtain what solution any homeowner needs is 100% the most crucial part of the quote process.
Here we will find out what the customer wants or doesn’t want, what their expectations are and what a new Viessmann boiler will mean to them when installed.
In this case the current 30 year old glow worm space saver heat only boiler with separate cylinder and loft tanks was on its last legs and was very inefficient and a bit unreliable. The hot water could only do one bath before having to wait another hour for the store to be reheated to run another so the evening bath schedule was a challenge to say the least.
Also the control setup was outdated and again wasn’t working correctly, even though the old boiler didn’t have to many parts if something went wrong, it really does get harder each year to find spare parts, and as most of us know they only break in the winter.
After discussing there existing hot water boiler system and then discussing the replacement options and where the boiler could go, we opted with the new Viessmann boiler 100-W 30kw with Vi-care smart thermostat.
The new boiler would be installed in the airing cupboard after the cylinder was removed, the old boiler that was in the dining room would be removed to free up a kitchen unit and the old flue hole bricked up with as close a match as possible to the current bricks.
When looking at any any new boiler installation, always I look at where is the easiest place to put a new boiler that will reduce work sand mess.
Putting the new Viessmann boiler in the airing cupboard meant that we already had 4 out of the six pipes we needed for the new boiler, a hot and cold supply and a heating flue and return, as the airing cupboard was in the middle of the house we would need a new gas supply and a condense pump to discharge into the rain water pipe outside using a route through the loft space.
The gas would come up in a cupboard under the stairs from the garage and was about 12metres long.
As the system was over thirty years old and even though we were fitting a filter, a good flush was needed, using the magna cleanse and vibration tool was imperative for continued efficiency and warranty terms and conditions.
The flue was the only other consideration and a vertical flue was the best option and had to be installed on one of the hottest days of the year which is always fun.
These type of jobs normally take 2 days and are a 2-3 man job depending on the amount of work required, we managed to complete the main part of the installation in one day so it was only myself back on day 2 to flush the system and brick up the old flue hole which looks pretty good even if I do say so myself.
As this was the first Viessmann boiler 100-W with vi-care I had done there was always going to be a little challenge, unfortunately the new stat was delayed due to a supply issue which seems to be a common theme across a lot of trades at the minute.
So even though I mess still able to commission the boiler with just the app, a further revisit was needed the following week, and as the weather was nice on this occasion it was no inconvenience to the customer.
The following week once the thermostat had been delivered we arranged a revisit to get the installation completed.
It took a couple of hours to get it set up for the first time as we needed to reset the boiler and recommission the system again to add on the vi-care stat.
Finally I could fully explain the operation and register the warranty and gas safe notification. As they had had a week with the mew boiler I obviously asked how they had found it, they said it was strange to not worry about if we have enough hot water as now it’s endless and everyone can have a bath without having to almost schedule the hot water back on again.
Conclusion
Overall the job went very smooth and I was very happy with the outcome, but most importantly, the customer was extremely satisfied and happy with their new Viessmann boiler. Finally, no more waiting for an hour to wait for the hot water to heat up between baths. This was an even more happier experience for the teenagers living at home, with no arguments who was having a bath first 😀 .
